Health Benefits of Running: Stay Ahead of the Game

This is me on a run around the neighborhood. A little motivation goes a long way.

I started running last year and it is definitely one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. I was 39 years before I became a regular runner. Like most people I thought it was too hard, it would take too much time and it just wouldn’t be worth all of the pain and discomfort. I was wrong. Running has given me another lease on life. Running has made me healthier and happier. Because of running I’m now off blood pressure medication, my cholesterol has never been lower and I’ve learned running burns off fat like no one’s business.

I’ve learned these specific benefits of running. Just look at me in the above photo. Running has helped me to stay ahead of the game. Here are more benefits of running:

Become Healthier – Running can raise your levels of good cholesterol (HDL) while also helping you increase lung function and use. Running can also boost your immune system and lower your risk of developing blood clots. Running as all cardio is great for your heart.

Increase Your Confidence – Running boosts your self-esteem by achieving goals which are measurable. You’ll know you are becoming a better runner when you track your runs for pace and distance. Sign up for a race if you are the competitive type. Sooner than you think you will look better and feel better.

Weight Loss – Cardio is great for losing or maintaining a consistent weight. I’ve personally lost about 5% body fat since I started running. Only cross country skiing burns more calories per minute.

Eliminate Muscle and Bone Loss – Running prevents your muscles and bone loss because our bones are made to accommodate the demands placed upon them. Regular running gets the demand it needs to stay healthy. Running also has been proven to promote the human growth hormone, which can help you to look younger.

Stress Reducer – Lowering stress is important because stress lower appetite and sleep quality. Running forces your body to exert excess energy and hormones. Running also actually aids in the reduction of developing tension headaches.

Eliminate Disease – Running can actually help to lower your risk of breast cancer, having a stroke, lower chance of diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Running strengthens your heart which reduces the risk of having a heart attack.

Depression Reducer – While running your brain will start to secrete hormones that naturally improve your mood. Once you start looking better you will start to feel better which includes your mood.

If you are new to running, start slow. Don’t over do it. If you start off at a pace that is comfortable to you and only go faster and farther when you can maybe you will love running as much as me. Don’t become a zombie, get out there and get healthy.
